The Department of Energy's Federal Advisory Committee (FACA) the Unconventional Resources Technology Advisory Committee (URTAC)will meet September 9 in Houston to review and discuss RPSEA's 2011 Draft Annual Plan.

The FACA is made up of the Ultra-Deepwater Advisory Committee (UDAC) and Unconventional Resources Technology Advisory Committee (URTAC) in which each reviews RPSEA's draft Annual Plan.

The Department's UDAC was established to advise on the development and implementation of programs related to ultra-deepwater natural gas and other petroleum resources and review and comment on the program's annual plan.

The Department's URTAC was established to advise on the development and implementation of programs related to onshore unconventional natural gas and other petroleum resources and review and comment on the program's annual plan.

PLEASE NOTE - The UDAC Meeting scheduled for September 8 has been canceled.

The UDAC and URTAC are open meetings to the public. RPSEA encourages all members to attend these meetings for more insight into the 2011 DAP and FACA process.

The URTAC will take place on September 9.

The Energy & Clean Technology Venture Forum is an event which showcases promising, early-stage, energy and clean tech companies and brings them together with venture capital investors and other industry providers. The average attendance at the Energy & Clean Tech Venture Forums is roughly 550-575. The majority of the audience represents members of the energy industry and investor community, along with others from business, entrepreneurship and academic organizations.

This is one of the largest Texas events that focuses solely on showcasing energy and clean technology ventures. It is hosted by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. The Rice Alliance is Rice University's flagship initiative to promote technology commercialization in Houston and Texas. Since inception in 1999, the Rice Alliance has assisted in the launch of over 250 technology companies that have raised over $500 million in early stage funding.

RPSEA President Mike Ming is honored to be on the Advisory Board and serve as a judge at the event.

On behalf of the entire Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems (EFD) program, you are personally invited to participate in the inaugural EFD – Europe Technology Exchange Workshop, September 23, in Florence Italy, following the annual SPE annual convention. It is not easy or inexpensive to participate in these meetings, but this will be an important event. Please contact your colleagues in your company or companies you work with that plan to attend the SPE meeting to participate in this workshop, either in the U.S. or offices in Europe.

EFD's goal is to establish a European equivalent to the successful EFD program that has been developed over the past five years in the United States. Ideally, the European program will also be a consortium, similar to the U.S. program, and that the two programs will be complimentary to one another.

The Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) is a 501(c)3 organization and Dr. Richard Haut from HARC manages the EFD program in the United States. Dr. Gerhard Thonhauser from the University of Leoben, Austria, manages the program in Europe. The EFD program focuses on technologies that reduce the environmental and societal tradeoffs associated with the development of energy sources identifying, developing and transferring critical, cost effective, new technologies that can provide policy makers and industry with the ability to develop reserves in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.

The objective of the meeting is to identify and discuss best practices, as well as to identify new innovations and applications related to unconventional natural gas development. The meeting will enable operators and regulators to learn about technologies being developed and implemented throughout the world, fostering relationships between Europe and the U.S. European operations will be able to learn about technologies that have been cost effectively applied in environmentally sensitive areas within the U.S., for example, produced water and hydraulic fracturing technologies. European rules and regulations have incentivized various developments of technologies that may be applicable to the U.S.

The agenda for the forum is being developed. Commitments have been made from two U.S. State Oil and Gas Commissioners and a district manager from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, who will be participating in the forum.

The Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems (EFD) Program will partner with The Ground Water Protection Council to host the second Water/Energy Sustainability Symposium to address challenges in meeting future water and energy needs. The event will occur in Pittsburgh, PA, September 26 – 29, 2010, see: www.WaterEnergy2010.com for more information. The event will be co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This innovative symposium will bring together leaders from government, energy and water industries, academia, water organizations, and other stakeholders, to chart a collaborative course toward sustainability for both resources. The four-day symposium will be dedicated to understanding water-energy inter-relationships and the science, technology, and policy needs identified by the participants as steps towards integrated water-energy planning and sustainability in these changing times.

The Oiltech Investment Network has been established by leading Private Equity (PE) technology funders that specialise in investments into potentially high growth technology businesses in the upstream oil and gas sector. As such, the TACs provide a bottom-up, end-user-driven program. There are a total of nine UDW TACs. The UDW TACs are open to the public.

The Reservoir Engineering TAC's goal is to examine trends that are of significant generic interest to the industry, while avoiding detailed reservoir issues where participants have competitive concerns. Focus is field development, appraisal and production, and reservoir surveillance.

The Met-Ocean TAC's goal is to improve knowledge and modeling capabilities of the GOM circulation, which will provide more accurate facility design criteria and reduce downtime during deepwater drilling operations. Focus is the effects of changing weather patterns on hurricane severity, operational 3-D current forecast modeling capable of simulating the loop/eddies, and modeling for strong near-bottom currents.
